CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed over several decades by former gymnast Greg Glassman, with the first affiliated gym opening in 1995. Police academies, firefighters, military special operations, champion martial artists and professional athletes have long since been incorporating CrossFit into their training programs. Within the past few years, it has become a mainstream workout program, with people from all walks of life adopting it as a way to get into the best shape of their lives.
At it’s core, it is a strength and conditioning system that focuses on constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement. These workouts, combine a myriad of exercises commonly found in weightlifting, sprinting and gymnastics. They are designed to simultaneously enhance cardiovascular endurance, power, flexibility, speed, agility and balance. “Our specialty, is not specializing” is a phrase you’ll often hear associated with CrossFit, because the end goal is to build a system which prepares the trainee for any physical circumstance, whether you’re involved in professional sports, hunting drug traffickers, or carrying bags of mulch to the backyard.
CrossFit is also the community that is forged when people do these workouts together. The group dynamic is one that fosters healthy competition among peers. It’s a known fact that you push yourself harder when working out alongside other people. The camaraderie that’s built when you encourage each other through intense workouts and the little personal victories achieved when surpassing your goals is something that is hard to replicate when working out alone. This is one of the key components as to why it’s so effective. In addition, the class is lead by a certified coach/trainer. You are monitored and motivated through every exercise by the coach. It’s essentially like having a personal trainer.
The CrossFit program is universally scalable, with intensity and weights adjusted according to your own personal fitness levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced athlete, it can be altered to fit any individual regardless of age or experience. With the workout routines changing on a daily basis, you see greater results because the body never adapts to a specific exercise and you don’t hit those plateaus commonly associated with normal workouts.
